So, back in February I met a woman called Penny Woods who was talking at an island gathering of charities, enterprises and organisations. I have to admit, I really wasn’t sure why I was there, or who Energise Me were in the context of Penny’s Satellite Club presentation – good as it was!
But today, that meeting makes sense!
Adventure Activities Isle of Wight has just been awarded funding to set up 6 activity clubs for Island young people to get outdoors and get more active… and we couldn’t be more delighted!
This grassroots funding is important to us as part of our youth development but is so much more than that. Funding like this (thank you Penny for that follow up meeting in March to explain it all!) means that young people on the Isle of Wight who struggle to access activities and sport will now have 6 months of free places to support them to…
- Learn new skills
- Have positive experiences
- Develop healthy lifestyle choices
What’s different about Satellite Clubs?
The basis for the clubs is that they are fully inclusive and led by young people aged between 14 and 19 years – so we are facilitators, rather than just providers, of the activity sessions.
Each club will have an individual on the Youth Panel and work closely with our qualified Instructors to develop activities that young island people want to do, engage them in a way they can relate to, and support them to achieve their goals (not ours).
How will we use the funding?
The hard work starts as we begin to talk to our networks across the Island, plan an Open Day filled with fun taster activity sessions, discuss with young people how we shape the clubs, brief the Instructor team and get working with local suppliers for the ‘other stuff’ we’ll need like brochures, equipment and snacks (a lot of snacks!).
To sum it all up… go to meetings, make new connections, ask the stupid questions because they often lead to inspiring people, new opportunities and great adventures!
