As a qualified British Canoeing Coach Tutor, it’s been fascinating to work with this leading UK organisation in paddlesports as the new coaching awards have been developed.
Not only do the Personal Performance Awards encourage and open up achievement and development across the range of paddlesports (canoeing, Stand Up Paddling, kayaking) for individuals – they promote progression for those who coach individuals.
Why does advancing coaching practice matter?
I believe, along with British Canoeing, that capacity-building the watersports sector through leading edge technical expertise is the key to developing both accessible grassroots engagement and enabling our incredible professional, elite athletes and endurance competitors.
At the forefront of this approach is youth development – getting young people out onto the water, understanding and respecting the environment they’re in, and then getting that buzz from achieving more than they thought possible. To get the best out of these water sessions, you need to ‘put the best in’, that means great coaching ability.
So we will continue to challenge perceptions on coaching, technique and application to further Stand Up Paddling and all forms of paddlesports.
