When Sallie from Adventure Activities IoW contacted us asking if we would like to run a brand workshop for a new programme for young people, we were keen to get involved.
Ultimate Active is a free 6 month programme of adventure activities for Isle of Wight 14 to 19 year olds looking to get outdoors and get active! A fantastic scheme to encourage learning new skills while having fun and promoting healthy activities.
Sallie, Seve, Kobe and Daisy arrived at the Brightbulb offices full of energy and ready to create a brand. We were fascinated with these young adults and their aspirations in life. Daisy dreams of becoming an extreme sports film maker, Kobe wants to be a costume designer, and Seve wants to make computer games and programmes.
All of them clearly have a creative mind and we all sat down to discuss Ultimate Active. They discussed a name change, however, collectively we couldn’t come up with anything as good as Ultimate Active so we decided to shorten it to Ultim8 Active to fit in with the young vibe. Seve came up with a few sketches that looked fantastic and inspired ideas from Daisy and Kobe.
Adam, our web designer, sat on the computer translating all the ideas being thrown at him and we could all see a new logo coming to life. We discussed colours and which colours would represent activity on the land and water. Daisy, Seve and Kobe decided on orange, green and blue.
We then talked about how we could use the 8 as a figure. Fi and Seve came up with the idea that it is a person, which led Seve to doodle someone holding a paddle.
After an hour or so of throwing around ideas, we had the basis of a logo and agreed to work up some final designs based on what we’d all achieved together. It was a fantastic session and Adam had a lot to work with so he finalised the logo within a couple of days to send over the final versions.
This is where Sallie adds a bit…
Brightbulb sent over 4 worked up, final logo concepts after the Build Your Brand workshop. Did we just decide which one we liked best? NO!
Adventure Activities IoW put the logos out for public vote 🙂
“Working on the Ultim8 Active logo with the Brightbulb team, Sallie and the kids was a new and interesting experience. Quite often I’ll be part of a team of individuals in which ideas are chucked around the table and visuals are thrown together using everyone’s input however, this meeting was different with the fact that we had the creative input and buzzing energy from a younger demographic. This was great to see the world through the eyes of a younger person and gave us more perspective when creating their logo, enabling us to see what kids like. The whole meeting was a great success and we were kept on our toes with ideas coming in from all angles.
After the meeting, I worked on creating some additional visuals to put forward to the Ultim8 Active team, while keeping in mind the design requests that were made. It was interesting to see that most adults picked the more simplest ideas while the younger generation preferred the original heavier logo.
Overall, we wouldn’t of been able to come up with such an effective logo without them.” ADAM, CREATIVE WIZARD, BRIGHTBULB DESIGN
